  • Intravenous catheters may be placed through burned skin if needed or intraosseous infusions may be used.
  • Usually not included are intraosseous infusion, medical assisted rapid sequence induction, surgical airway management, decompression of tension pneumothorax and advanced medication.
  • Medical conditions that might also preclude the use of intraosseous infusion include osteopenia, osteopetrosis, and osteogenesis imperfecta as fractures are more likely to occur.
  • Intraosseous infusion is contraindicated when there is a possibility that the potential site of injection has a known, or suspected fracture, appears to be visibly infected, or is burned.
  • In 2004, Vidacare received its first U . S . Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) clearance for the EZ-IO Intraosseous Infusion System  the first battery-powered device to establish immediate vascular access using the IO space.
